This past Wednesday, April 2, 2025, honorees and guests from local schools gathered at MTU's Memorial Union Ballroom to recognize award recipients at the Copper Country Association of School Boards (CCASB) annual banquet. Chassell's staff nominated individuals in three different categories: Student Leadership, Outstanding Education Employee, and School Service. This year's honorees in those respective categories were Mariah Juntunen (10th grade), Mr. Joshua Normand (4th grade teacher), and Mrs. Jennifer Marshall (Business Office Manager).
Student Leadership Award - Mariah Juntunen
Leadership is not just about holding a title; it’s about making a difference. Mariah is a student who leads by example, inspiring those around her with kindness, initiative, and a passion for doing the right thing.
Mariah consistently demonstrates what it means to be a leader. She steps up when others need help, whether it’s assisting classmates with their daily work, modeling positive behavior, or taking on leadership roles when they are needed. She is actively involved in groups and initiatives that strengthen the school’s climate, such as student council, serving as a barista in our school’s cafe, and as a Chief Science Officer to get our younger students interested in STEM. Her efforts help bring new energy and enthusiasm to programs that make Chassell an even better place to learn and grow.
Her self-motivation and commitment to improvement don’t go unnoticed; she sparks positive change and encourages others to do the same. Mariah's dedication to leadership and service makes a lasting impact on our school and community and we know it will continue to do just that.
Outstanding Education Employee Award - Mr. Joshua Normand
Great educators do more than teach lessons; they inspire, connect, and create lasting experiences that shape the lives of students and colleagues alike. Mr. Normand embodies all of these qualities and more.
He is a leader in the classroom and beyond, bringing a charismatic and team-oriented approach to teaching that strengthens the bonds between students and staff. Many students look up to Mr. Normand as a mentor, and it’s clear that his dedication to education goes far beyond the curriculum. Whether making learning hands-on and engaging, fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere, or helping to lead experiences like Camp Nesbit, Mr. Normand continuously goes the extra mile to ensure that students leave not just with knowledge, but with memories that last a lifetime.
Even in the face of curveballs and challenges, Josh handles each situation with a grace and ease that inspire those around him. His patience and dedication to making learning accessible and fun for all students is a remarkable quality that encourages others to think outside the box. Through commitment, level-headedness, and a team-minded approach, he continues to make an undeniable positive impact on the Chassell school community.
