******March 1, 2010:
As I look at administrative structure in our district and flesh out our options for next year, I’ve been doing a lot of reading on what makes for an effective school. The research I see keeps coming back to the effect of positive, strong, and long-term relationships within the district and community. The better the relationships are over a long period of time, the more effective the educational program is.
It makes sense. Learning only happens in some sort of relationship. Even when we learn on our own, like when reading a book, we develop a distant relationship with the author’s thoughts. Watching the news creates a relationship with the newscaster, even though it is an extremely shallow one.
One of the advantages of our close-knit district is the deep relationships our school children have with others. Already, my kindergarten daughter has close friends from school. Our building is a place for children and families¬–and not just during the school day. It’s pretty common for staff members’ younger children to be here after school, and of course evening functions are full of kids having fun.
We hear from graduates and their parents that because our students learn to get along with others, speak up in class, and work together, they do better in their future jobs, education, or the military. Students from bigger districts, who have been able to “blend into the woodwork” in high school, tend to do the same later in life. Our graduates are not afraid to speak out, work hard, and work with others.
This is a value in the community of Chassell as well. Whether it’s at a Lions Club meeting, church, walking to the post office, or at the park, I’m always amazed at how people are friendly, and always willing to help out.
We pull together. We all make little sacrifices so Chassell Township Schools can continue to be about the business of providing an effective education for our youth. This truly is a great place to learn.
As always, please let us know how we can help you have the best education possible!
Serving you,
Mike Gaunt, Superintendent
